Papilot · A Modern Agentic LaTeX Editor
Papilot lets paper authors direct coding agents to edit LaTeX and review each proposed change on the typeset PDF. Writers can accept, reject, or revise changes before committing them to Git.
Who it's for
- Researchers writing LaTeX papers who want to request revisions by annotating the rendered PDF.
- Authors using supported coding agents who need to inspect proposed edits in page context before accepting them.
- LaTeX teams using Git who want agent tasks isolated in worktrees and accepted revisions recorded in history.
Not the right fit if…
- Teams needing a Windows desktop app: the listed desktop downloads are for macOS and Linux.
- CLI users on Node.js versions earlier than 22.22: the page states that the CLI requires Node.js 22.22 or later.
How it fits your workflow
Open a paper and select a sentence or mark an equation or figure in the PDF. Describe the requested change; Papilot gives the agent the relevant source lines.
Review each proposed edit in its typeset context. Accept or reject it, or comment when the agent should revise it.
Tasks run in separate Git worktrees. Committing and pushing accepted changes are separate steps, and changes remain in Git history.

Key features
- PDF-based annotations
- Select a sentence or mark an equation or figure in the rendered paper, then describe the requested change. The agent is given the exact source lines associated with the annotation.
- Typeset change review
- Review proposed edits in their rendered, typeset context and accept or reject changes individually. Changes not accepted do not reach the paper.
- Feedback and revision loop
- Comment on a proposed change when it needs more work; the agent can revise it in response to that feedback.
- Git worktrees and change history
- Each task runs in its own Git worktree. Committing and pushing accepted changes are separate steps, preserving paper changes in Git history.
- Desktop and CLI versions
- Papilot offers a desktop app for macOS and Linux as well as a command-line version installable from npm.
Works with
- Coding agents
- Git
- TeX distributions
Limitations to know
- The desktop app is listed for macOS and Linux; no Windows desktop download is shown.
- The CLI requires Node.js 22.22 or later.
- Papilot requires Git and a TeX distribution, with MacTeX and TeX Live given as examples.
Alternatives to consider
-
DotMD
Choose it if you want a similar agent-edit review workflow for Markdown documents on Mac rather than LaTeX papers reviewed as typeset PDFs.
-
Rewrite
Choose it if you want an offline desktop editor for Word, LaTeX, and PDF files with AI rewriting and accept-or-reject edits rather than Papilot's PDF-annotation-driven agent workflow.
Getting started
npm install -g papilot
The CLI requires Node.js 22.22 or later. Papilot uses Git and the user's own TeX distribution, such as MacTeX or TeX Live.
- Install the CLI with `npm install -g papilot`, or download the desktop app for macOS or Linux.
- Ensure Git and a TeX distribution are available.
- Run `papilot demo` to prepare the example paper and start the local Papilot app.
- Annotate the PDF and review the agent's proposed changes.
