DataZen
DataZen is a lightweight, local-first desktop workspace for working with databases that embeds AI into the actual query workflow rather than as a separate chatbot. It supports querying, debugging, analyzing, visualizing and automating databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, Redis and others via plugins) and includes features like NL→SQL, EXPLAIN analysis, charting, cross-database workflows and an MCP server for AI agents. It's free and open source (GPLv3), runs locally without requiring an account, and keeps database data and credentials on the user's machine while sending only schema and query context to the configured AI provider.
DataZen is a free open-source desktop database workspace: natural-language SQL, one-click error diagnosis, EXPLAIN analysis, charts, cross-database workflows, and a built-in MCP server for AI agents. Local-first, under 15 MB.

Natural-language SQL (NL2SQL)
Ask the database in plain language; DataZen reads the schema, generates SQL, and runs it for review, tweak or save.
SQL error diagnosis & one-click fixes
AI explains causes of SQL errors in plain language and generates corrected SQL ready to run.
EXPLAIN analysis & performance suggestions
AI analyzes query plans (EXPLAIN), pinpoints bottlenecks and suggests optimizations such as indexes to verify before applying.
Built-in MCP server & client
Expose queries, schema inspection, EXPLAIN and workflows as tools for AI agents (works with Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline and any MCP-compatible client); can also act as an MCP client.
Cross-database workflows
Compose reusable workflows that span multiple databases and steps (queries, AI steps, conditions, loops, exports) to automate recurring tasks and reports.
Instant charting
Every result set can be turned into a chart in one click, with smart recommendations for chart type and export to PNG/SVG.
Local-first privacy & OS keychain
Database credentials are AES-256-GCM encrypted and stored in the OS keychain; DataZen runs no cloud database service and only shares schema/query context with your configured AI provider.
Extensible drivers
PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite and Redis are built in, with additional drivers available via plugins (MongoDB, ClickHouse, DuckDB, SQL Server, etc.).
Tiny installer & fast startup
Installer size under 15 MB and near-instant startup compared to typical heavy database clients.
Open source (GPLv3)
Source code is auditable on GitHub and the product is distributed under the GPLv3 license.
Pricing
DataZen is free and open source under the GPLv3 license; no account or paid tier is required.

Use Cases
Daily database work for backend & full-stack developers
Use the SQL editor, schema browsing, ER diagrams, EXPLAIN analysis and backups as a daily driver for development and debugging tasks.
AI-assisted development & agent integration
Plug DataZen into AI agents via the built-in MCP server to let agents run inspected queries, perform schema inspection, and use workflows as tools.
Data-oriented technical users and reporting
Explore tables, chart result sets, automate recurring reports, and summarize findings with AI without leaving the desktop.
Integrations
OpenAI / Anthropic / DeepSeek / Custom endpoint
Configure any of these AI providers (or a custom endpoint) as the AI backend for NL2SQL, error diagnosis and EXPLAIN analysis.
MCP-compatible clients (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline)
Works as an MCP server so these agents can access queries, schemas and workflows; DataZen can also act as an MCP client.
Databases and plugin drivers
Built-in drivers for PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, SQLite and Redis; optional plugin drivers for MongoDB, ClickHouse, DuckDB, SQL Server and more.
